You Watch Me! I'll Fly!

I'm going to succeed!
I'll do it - you'll see
I'll learn and I'll try
To be all I can be!

With dreams in my heart
And faith as my wings
I'll reach for the sky
Where eagles can sing

When storms show no mercy
And toss me about
I'll jump on their backs
Just ride them right out!

Then gather my strength
And hold my head high
I will not be beaten!
You watch me! I'll Fly!

  1. I love this poem. I heard it at the Connecticut poetry competition in Hartford seven years ago and remembered enough of it to look it up :)

  2. Thanks so much for commenting! :) I did enter this in some magazine contest several years ago,(something I don't do anymore) but I don't think it was from Connecticut. I was one of the winners and had to pay to have it published in a book, which I didn't. Thank you though for remembering it - how nice!! :)

  3. Hello, I heard this poem at a Connecticut poetry competition as well and it is my favorite. It was a competition for school children from kindergarten through 12th grade and I don't think you entered it, if I remember correctly your poem was the motivational speech and was on the inside cover of the book. I believe this was the 2004-5 school year I was in 8th grade. I have it around here somewhere, but I'm moving and couldn't find it. The last stanza is my favorite and I painted it on my car quoted to you. I am a teacher and so now you have inspired at least two generations of school students :)

  4. Oh my goodness - I had no idea my poem had gotten around like that - I am SO touched by your post - and have to admit, getting pretty emotional over it too. :) I had entered it in a contest many years ago and I won some kind of notice but I am really surprised by this. Thank you so very much for making my whole day!!! :)

  5. I just remembered there was a lovely post from 2012 (just before yours) and it was about the same poetry contest!! :)

  7. My son read your this poem at his TK graduation this last May 2016. It moved me so much then. Tonight when I was looking for a book, I came across my son's graduation program and listed was "You Watch Me! I'll Fly! by Louise Herman" read by Dominik... I googled the title so I could read the words and it brought tears to my eyes. My son walked in the room and asked what I was reading. I showed it and he read the poem to like just like he did that night in front of all of those parents. Thank you for inspiring teachers, parents and students. -Barbora H.

  8. Barbara - I can't tell you how very very moved I am by your beautiful comment - thank you so much for taking the time to leave it.!!
